The City of Markham, is the fourth-largest community within the Greater Toronto Area with a population of over 346,000 and a land area of 212 square kilometres.  Located just to the East of Hwy 404 and just North of Hwy 407 ETR, the city is a bedroom community to Toronto but is also home to a thriving and growing business community consisting of over 9,900 companies and more than 400 Canadian head offices including IBM, Aviva Insurance, AMD, Bank of China, GE Digital Energy, Honeywell, Huawei Technologies, Lenovo, Johnson & Johnson, Toshiba, Honda and Hyundai.  Over 1,000 technology and life sciences companies are based in Markham. These two sectors alone employ 34,000 people – over one-fifth of the total workforce of 158,000.

From a retail perspective, Markham is home to several large malls of 100+ stores including King Square Shopping mall (700 stores), Markville Shopping Centre (250 stores), Langham Square 9700 stores), Market Village (170 stores) and Pacific Mall (450 mini-shops). Many shopping centres in Markham are also Asian-oriented. This is a reflection of the large Asian, particularly Chinese Canadian, population found in Markham. They carry a wide variety of traditional Chinese products, apparel, and foods. On Highway 7, between Woodbine and Warden Avenues, is First Markham Place, containing numerous shops and restaurants; this is several kilometres east of Richmond Hill’s Chinese malls. Further east along Highway 7 is an older plaza is at the southwest quadrant with the intersection with Kennedy Road.

Pacific Mall is the most well-known Chinese mall in Markham, located at Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue East, which, combined with neighbouring Market Village Mall and Splendid China Mall, forms the second largest Chinese shopping area in North America, after the Golden Village in Richmond, British Columbia. In close proximity, at Steeles East and Warden Avenue, there is the New Century Plaza mall and a half-block away there is a plaza of Chinese shops anchored by a T & T Supermarket.

From a restaurant perspective, the choices in Markham are broad and varied. Residents have the choice of virtually every chain restaurant operating in Canada along with independent restaurants offering every type of food imaginable from fine Asian cuisine, Italian, French, Greek and much more. Popular spots include Peter’s Fine Dining, The School Restaurant, Lemon Bistro, Smash kitchen & Bar, Inspire Restaurant, Los Chico’s Brasa, Blacksmith’s Bistro….just to name a few.
