Pickering, the first of the GTA’s Eastern suburbs, has a unique community character. Home to over 100,000 residents and 35,000 jobs the City is in the midst of a transformation from a suburban community to a sustainable city. A high quality of life, concern for the environment, and developing business infrastructure are part of the cities attraction.

Residents of Pickering either work in Durham Region or commute to the GTA via GO Train, Hwy 401 which runs through the Southern portion of the city, or Hwy 407 which crosses Pickering to the North. A recently completed enclosed pedestrian bridge spans highway 401 connecting the Go Station to the expanding downtown core which now includes the Pickering Town Centre Mall, the Durham College/Centennial College Learning Centre, Pickering Municipal Offices, Central Library and Pickering Recreation complex in addition to a variety of outdoor plaza’s, office buildings and restaurants.

The city is served by the Rouge Valley Health System which includes Scarborough Centenary Hospital to the West and Ajax Hospital to the East.

In addition to the over 200 stores within Pickering Mall, Pickering features a variety of additional retail stores primarily located along Highway 2 (Kingston Rd.) including a National Sports Warehouse Outlet, Running Free, HomeSense, Toys R Us, Home Depot and Walmart.

A far as restaurants go, Pickering is home to a wide range of franchised restaurants including Jack Astors, Milestones, Mandarin, Crabby Joe’s and Lone Star Texas Grill, a variety of pubs including The Fox Goes Free, Knights Corner, Irish Times and Harp & Crown and a variety of independents from Makimono Sushi (Japanese) and  Zeera by the Bay (Indian) to the Thai Orchid and Pie Wood Fired Pizza.

Pickering is a community made up of creative minds and a vibrant arts and cultural scene. The City celebrates its local talent through a number of festivals including the popular Pickering Ribfest and Pickering Waterfront Festival, as well as performances and gallery exhibitions throughout the year, making it a destination spot for visitors as well as a great place to live.

Along the lake lies Millenium Waterfront Park, home to outdoor concerts throughout the summer, hiking trails, marinas, a yacht club and two beaches. The waterfront area is also home to a Nautical village with a variety of shops and restaurants including Hy Tea, the Waterfront Bistro and The Port.

On the Western border of Pickering and Toronto is the stunning Rouge Valley with miles and miles of fantastic hiking trails through dense woodlands and grasslands suurounding the Rouge River.
